Global Dimension and the School Curriculum
Curricula in England, Scotland, N Ireland and Wales have seen developments recently that require teachers to introduce issues and tackle attitudes central to global education and requiring a global dimension. They are:
"" Education for Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is about maintaining and improving the quality of life for people today at the same time as ensuring that the quality of life for generations to come is safeguarded. It involves consideration of the social, economic, and environmental aspects of change.
"" Citizenship Education
Citizenship education is about pupils learning social and moral responsibility, community involvement and political literacy. It has at its heart a commitment to active citizenship, where pupils are engaged in values-based participation on issues of personal, local and global concern.
"" Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
PSHE is concerned with developing knowledge, skills and understanding amongst pupils so that they can develop confidence and responsibility, play an active role as citizens, develop good relationships, respect differences between people and develop healthy, safer lifestyles.
"" Race Relations Amendment Act 2000
The Race Relations Amendment Act strengthens and adds to the existing provisions of the Race Relations Act 1976, placing a statutory duty on public authorities to promote good relations between persons of different racial groups. It seeks to ensure that the public sector better reflects the society that it serves.
